He was a counter-culture figure, having been a member of the improv group ‘The Committee’ in the 1960s and 70s and a real radio DJ before becoming an actor. His role on WKRP in Cincinnati earned him two Emmy Award nominations. Hesseman appeared in numerous television shows and films, including ‘One Day at a Time,’ ‘Dragnet,’ ‘The Bob Newhart Show,’ ‘That ’70s Show,’ ‘This Is Spinal Tap,’ ‘Police Academy 2,’ ‘Heat,’ and ‘About Schmidt.’ He hosted ‘Saturday Night Live’ several times.
