On March 3, 1991, during his arrest for driving while intoxicated, he was severely beaten by officers of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). A bystander, George Holliday, filmed the incident, and the footage sparked public outrage and was covered by news media around the world. The trial of the officers involved and their subsequent acquittals led to the 1992 Los Angeles riots. King was later awarded $3.8 million in damages from the city of Los Angeles. He used some of these funds to start his own Hip-Hop music label titled Straight Alta-Pazz Recording Company. Throughout his life, King struggled with alcohol and drug abuse. He was found dead in his swimming pool on June 17, 2012, due to accidental drowning, with alcohol, cocaine, and marijuana found in his system.
