John Lynch is an American retired professional football player. He was born in Hinsdale, Illinois in September 1971. He played football, basketball, and baseball at Torrey Pines High School. He played football and baseball at Stanford University. He was drafted #66 by the Florida Marlins in the 1992 Major League Baseball draft and played for two seasons in the minor leagues. He was then drafted #82 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1993 NFL Draft, playing for them from 1993 to 2003 and winning Super Bowl XXXVII in his final year with the team. In 2000, he was named the NFL Alumni Defensive Back of the Year and was a four-time All-Pro from 1999 to 2002. He later signed with the Denver Broncos, playing from 2004 to 2007, and in 2006, he won the Bart Starr Man of the Year Award and the ‘Whizzer’ White NFL Man of the Year award. After agreeing to a one-year deal with the New England Patriots in 2008 but being released, he announced his retirement. During his NFL career, Lynch was a nine-time Pro Bowler and recorded over 1,000 career tackles as a strong safety. After retiring, he joined the NFL on Fox as a color commentator. In 2017, Lynch transitioned into front office work, becoming the General Manager of the San Francisco 49ers.
