Naya Marie Rivera (January 12, 1987 – July 8, 2020) was an American actress, singer, and model, best known for her role as Santana Lopez on the Fox musical comedy-drama series Glee. Rivera began her career as a child actress and model, appearing in national television commercials. At the age of four, she landed the role of Hillary Winston on the CBS sitcom The Royal Family. Between 1992 and 2002, Rivera appeared on numerous popular sitcoms. In 2009, she was cast as Santana Lopez on Glee, which became her breakthrough role. Her character’s role became more significant in the second season, where she portrayed a lesbian struggling with her sexuality. Beyond acting, Rivera also had a music career, signing with Columbia Records in 2011. In 2016, she released her memoir, Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes, and Growing Up. Rivera tragically passed away on July 8, 2020, in an accidental drowning at Lake Piru, California.
