Ernest Gary Gygax (1938-2008) was an American game designer and author. He is best known for co-creating the pioneering tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) with Dave Arneson in 1974. Gygax’s love of games and an appreciation for fantasy and science fiction literature led him to create an organization of wargaming clubs and found the Gen Con tabletop game convention. In 1973, he co-founded the company TSR (originally Tactical Studies Rules) with Don Kaye. The next year, TSR published D&D. In 1976, he founded The Dragon, a magazine based around the new game. In 1977, he began developing a more comprehensive version of the game called Advanced Dungeons & Dragons.
