Arne Naess Jr. (born Arne Rudolf Ludvig Raab on December 8, 1937, in Germany; died January 13, 2004, in South Africa) was a Norwegian shipping magnate, businessman, and mountaineer. He was the former husband of singer Diana Ross. Naess began his business career in 1964, working for his uncle Erling Dekke Næss, a shipping magnate, in New York City. In 1968, he launched his own business in London, focusing on shipping, oil, and real estate. He made significant investments over the years, including in the IT business Tandberg Data. By the time of his death, his empire was reportedly worth $600 million. An avid mountaineer, by age 19, Naess had already made twenty first ascents of mountains in Norway. He led the first Norwegian expedition to Mount Everest in 1985. He died in 2004 in a mountain climbing accident in South Africa.
