After graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in Industrial Engineering, Hickam served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, earning a Bronze Star and an Army Commendation Medal. Following his military service, he worked as an engineer for the U.S. Army Missile Command before joining NASA in 1981. At NASA, Hickam trained astronauts and worked on various missions, including the Hubble Space Telescope deployment and repair missions. He retired from NASA in 1998 to pursue his writing career full-time. Hickam has written several best-selling books, including the Coalwood series and the Josh Thurlow series.
